How we work
We have chosen to help the poor people in Sakorola,
Guinea by setting up small projects with a clear scope
that should be able to succeed on a reasonable budget.
The projects are:
To build a school for the children.
To set up a learning centre for the women.
To build a small medical centre.
To create more access to clean drinking water.
THE SCHOOL
The Project so far:
A suitable building site has already been found in the village of Sakorola.
The Building site has been kindly donated by the village elders as an expression of their support.
The first batch of sand has been delivered and we want to take advantage of this by moving our schedule forward, so that these children will have their school by the end of 2008.
Construction of the school can only start when we have the required funds for essential construction
materials such as bricks, doors, cement etc.
Our plan is to build a multifunctional building, starting with the school’s classrooms.
The building needs:
4 classrooms to start with
1 room for the books and computers
I room for the teachers (director)
6 toilets: 2 for the girls, 2 for the boys and 2 for the teachers.
The cost of the workers in total is 20 millions GNF (local currency), which amounts to approximately 3.300 €.
The cost of the materials:
The authorities in Guinea have committed to providing teachers, once the village has a school building.
Additional funding will then be sought in order to pay for the teacher’s lodgings, books and other educational materials.
THE LEARNING CENTRE FOR WOMEN
The second project aims at helping set up a small sewing centre
for the women of the village.
The school building can house this learning centre.
Progress in the centre for women:
In October 2007, I gave 6 new manual blenders to
the elders in order to help the women.
There are many young mothers in the village who have few skills besides
taking care of their children and their husbands.
The blenders can be used to make peanut butter and Karite butter,
very important basic ingredients for their cooking.
Besides cooking we would like to teach these young ladies
how to make clothing, which will enable them to make and repair
their own clothing in their own village, and save them the time,
energy and cost of going all the way to Kankan.
In order to do that we need to provide them with sewing machines,
the facility and a teacher from the city of
Kankan to teach them two days a week.
To reduce the lack of healthy nutrition in the village,
we also want to teach them how to grow their own vegetables.
THE MEDICAL CENTER
The third project aims at setting up a small medical centre which will be useful not
only to the inhabitants of Sakorola, but also to all the other villages in the area.
This medical centre can be housed in an addition to the school building.
Access to clean drinking water
Building a health centre and creating better access to clean drinking water will
increase healthy living.
